薬物依存，なかでもコカイン中毒の治療に有望なワクチンの開発が進んでいる。このワクチンを中毒患者に接種すると体内に抗体が作られ，次にコカインを使用したときには血液に入ったコカインが抗体と結合し，血液中にとどまる。そのため，中枢神経への作用が阻止され，使用しても陶酔感を感じなくなり，患者は徐々にコカインを渇望しなくなる。新たに発表された94名の患者に接種した研究では，38％の患者で効果が認められた。ただ，残念ながら25％では抗体があまり作られなかった。今後，効果を改善できる可能性は高いという。（吉田素子）
A cocaine(1) vaccine(2) that recruits(3) the immune system(4) to help block the drug's euphoric(5) effects proved effective in 38 percent of subjects(6) who received the vaccine, said a Baylor College of Medicine researcher(7) who led the study.
A consortium(8) of researchers began the work when principal investigator(9) Dr. Thomas R. Kosten, a professor at BCM, was on faculty at(10) Yale University School of Medicine. Kosten and his team evaluated(11) the safety(12) and effectiveness(13) of a novel cocaine vaccine that has been more than 15 years in development. The report appears in the current issue of Archives(14) of General Psychiatry(15).
Plans to improve cocaine vaccine
"The concept(16) works(17)," said Kosten, "There are lots of ways to engineer(18) it after that to make it work better."
He plans to continue work to improve the vaccine and find better ways to bolster(19) the immune system against the effects of cocaine.
Kosten holds the Jay H. Waggoner Endowed Chair(20) in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences(21) at BCM. He is also the research director of the Veterans Affairs(22) National Substance Use Disorders(23) Quality Enhancement(24) Research Initiative(25) based at the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Houston.
This study took place in(26) one center, the Veterans Affairs Connecticut Healthcare System. Plans for a study of the vaccine in many sites are now under way(27).
Promising step
"The results of this study represent a promising step toward an effective medical treatment for cocaine addiction(28)," said Dr. Nora Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse(29).
