We are encouraged by reports that are now emerging from various clinical trials(1) of 2009 H1N1 influenza(2) vaccines(3), conducted by various vaccine manufacturers(4). We expect additional companies to announce their preliminary trial(5) results shortly. The early data from these trials indicate that 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccines are well tolerated(6) and induce(7) a strong immune response(8) in most healthy adults when administered(9) in a single unadjuvanted(10) 15-microgram(11) dose(12). We congratulate(13) the companies on these trials(14), which are an important part of the ongoing(15) worldwide(16) effort to develop vaccines to protect the public from 2009 H1N1 influenza.

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases(17) (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health(18), also is conducting clinical trials of 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccines, produced by Sanofi Pasteur and CSL Limited. The NIAID trials are testing two different dosages(19) (15 micrograms versus(20) 30 micrograms) and evaluating(21) the immune response to one and two doses(22) of these vaccines. More than 2,800 people are participating(23) in ongoing NIAID trials of these vaccines.

We are pleased to(24) note that preliminary analyses(25) of early data from the NIAID trials align with(26) the recently announced findings and those to be announced imminently(27) by other companies in that both vaccines studied induced what is likely to be a protective immune response(28) in most adults following a single dose in the same amount (15 micrograms) used in seasonal flu(29) vaccines. Specifically(30), in blood samples obtained 8 to 10 days after vaccination(31)
Among healthy adults who received a single 15-microgram dose of the Sanofi Pasteur vaccine, a robust(32) immune response was measured in 96 percent of adults aged(33) 18 to 64 and in 56 percent of adults aged 65 and older.
