成長ホルモンの不足した子供への治療薬である成長ホルモン剤は，口から飲み込むと胃酸で分解されてしまうため，胃を通らない注射剤が使われる。そのため，通常は毎日，痛い注射をしなくてはならないが，コンプライアンスが悪く，実際の注射の頻度は少なくなりがちだという。そこで，注射ではなく吸い込むタイプのホルモン剤が検討された。これを22人の子供たちに投与したところ，全員が注射よりこのタイプを選び，問題なく自分で使用することができた。また，成分は安全に肺から吸収された。吸入して使える子供用の薬は他にも開発される可能性があり，この研究結果が参考になりそうだという。（吉田素子）
A multi-center(1) clinical trial(2) led by a Riley Hospital for Children endocrinologist(3) has found that inhaled(4) growth hormone(5) (GH) is well tolerated(6) by children with GH deficiency(7) and that this easy-to-use(8) method can, over a one-week period, safely deliver GH to the blood stream(9). In addition to(10) having implications for(11) those who need GH, this first pediatric(12) study of administering(13) it through the lungs may also help researchers(14) interested in using this convenient method for effectively(15) delivering other types of medications(16) to children.
Results of the study appear in the June 2009 issue of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology(17) & Metabolism(18).
"We need to find less painful ways of administering drugs to children and we were pleased to see that inhaling(19) GH raised the levels of two important indicators(20) in the blood in these children for whom GH was prescribed(21) for growth hormone deficiency or multiple(22) pituitary hormone(23) deficiencies," said Emily Walvoord, M.D. (24), associate professor(25) of clinical pediatrics(26) at the Indiana University School of Medicine, who is the Riley Hospital physician coordinating investigator(27) of the five-center study of 22 patients.
Children taking growth hormone typically(28) must endure(29) years of daily injections(30). All of the participants(31) in this study preferred the inhaled version of the drug to injections. They ranged in age from 6 to 16 and had no trouble using the inhaler(32).
GH is a small peptide hormone(33) which is easily broken down by stomach acid(34) and therefore cannot be taken as a pill. Synthetic(35) GH has been available by injection since 1985.
